The LSU Football team is nearing the end of its Spring Practices as the Tigers will return from Spring Break after completing 11 Spring Practices with the team returning to the field on Monday. While the LSU Football team is fully focused on Spring Practices, the Spring Transfer portal window looms large as the Transfer Portal will open again on April 16th running through April 25th.
Unlike the Winter transfer portal window, the Spring transfer portal window is much shorter and there are far less entries into the transfer portal. Most of the entries either leave their program after losing a positional battle or leave in search for a better fit with increased NIL benefits.
The LSU Tigers went all in during the first transfer portal cycle of the offseason bringing in by far the biggest transfer class of the Brian Kelly era in terms of talent the team added. Heading into the Spring Transfer Portal window, the LSU Tigers will be far less active but, there are three potential needs for LSU this Spring.
Defensive Tackle
The Tigers entire plans at the defensive tackle position were changed this offseason to no fault of LSU as defensive line coach Bo Davis left LSU for the same position with the New Orleans Saints. Kyle Williams has taken the job and has gotten great reviews early on but, you never truly know how good a position is until the first game against another team.
Coming into the Spring, there were a ton of questions around LSU's defensive tackle room and it was the position everyone circled as one LSU may need to address during the Spring transfer window. Kyle Williams didn't get to pick his pieces at defensive tackle and if the younger players aren't developing like LSU may have hoped, the Tigers may need to dip into the transfer portal.
The difficult thing for LSU is that solid SEC Caliber defensive tackles don't often enter the transfer portal and like the Tigers saw last Spring they come with a hefty asking price. If the right impact player enters the transfer portal LSU may pounce but, it's always difficult to project who may enter the transfer portal.
Offensive Line
The LSU Football team loses four of its five starting offensive linemen to the NFL which always makes it difficult to feel great heading into a season especially in the SEC. This Spring, LSU's offensive line has shown a ton of promise especially with some of the Tigers true freshmen showing the ability to play as soon as this season.
The LSU Football team will pursue an offensive lineman if a player the staff knows can be a high level starter enters the transfer portal. The Tigers spent far too much on this roster to pass up on filling a need especially on the offensive line as Garrett Nussmeier isn't the most mobile quarterback.
Safety
The safety position has been a massive hole for the LSU Tigers for several years as the play at the position hasn't met the LSU standard since Brian Kelly's arrival at LSU. This offseason, LSU added transfer Tamarcus Cooley to the room while LSU has several younger players at the position the staff is hoping will develop.
The safety position falls into the same categories as both the defensive tackle position and the offensive line for LSU this Spring. If the play isn't at the level LSU will hope for, the staff may have no choice but, to pursue one of the top players at the position this Spring. On the other hand, it's difficult to find SEC Caliber safeties and LSU may not want to bring in a player that pushes out one of LSU's more promising younger players.
