Evaluating LSU's current College Football bowl game projections
As the LSU Tigers are on the bye week this weekend, we're able to look toward the end of the season as LSU has just four games remaining. The LSU Tigers have a must win game next weekend against Alabama as if the Tigers don't win they'll miss out on the College Football Playoff. As things currently stand, here is where all of the Networks have LSU playing during Bowl season.
24/7 Sports - Gator Bowl Vs Syracuse - January 2nd
The first bowl projection has the LSU Tigers taking on the Syracuse Orange in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. Syracuse is currently a two loss team like LSU is but, given that LSU has faced a tougher schedule the Tigers are still alive in the Playoff Hunt compared to the Orange.
Athlon - Gator Bowl Vs SMU - January 2nd
Here the LSU Tigers would take on ACC Newcomer SMU in the Gator Bowl which is played in Jacksonville, Florida. The Mustangs are having a solid year thus far and are in contention for the ACC Championship game which means they're far from an easy opponent. LSU has played in the Gator Bowl once winning 30 to 13 over South Carolina in 1987 with Wendell Davis taking home the MVP Award.
Bleacher Report - Music City Bowl Vs Wisconsin - December 30th
Bleacher Report and ESPN's Kyle Bonagura has LSU heading to Tennessee to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the Music City Bowl. The Tigers faced Wisconsin in the Bowl Game last season with the Tigers coming from behind to beat the Badgers in the Reliaquest Bowl.
CBS Sports - Texas Bowl Vs Texas Tech - December 31st
The Texas Bowl has replaced the Houston Bowl and is one of the newer Bowl Games as it was founded in 2005. Here the Tigers draw a high flying offense taking on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Tigers have appeared in this game once and faced Texas Tech winning 56 to 27 with Leonard Fournette taking home the MVP as he scored five touchdowns.
ESPN - Cheez-it Citrus Bowl Vs Illinois - December 31st
ESPN's Mark Schlabach has the LSU Tigers taking on Illinois which has become a popular projection in the Cheez-it Citrus Bowl. The Tigers appeared in this game two seasons ago dominating Purdue winning 63 to 7 over Purdue. The LSU Football program has appeared in this Bowl Game six times with a 3-3 record winning two of their last three matchups. In 1979, David Woodley, Jerry Murphree, and Benjy Thibodeaux split the MVP while Derrius Guice and Malik Nabers taking home the most recent MVPs.
Sports Illustrated - Music City Bowl Vs Illinois - December 30th
As things currently stand, LSU's most likely Non-College Football Playoff bowl opponent is the Fighting Illini. In this scenario, the Tigers head to Nashville to take on Illinois at the Music City Bowl. LSU has appeared in the Music City Bowl once, in the 2014 Music City Bowl when it lost to Notre Dame 31-28. The Tigers have been projected into this game three times which means we should all keep an eye on the potential of this game down the stretch.
USA Today - Reliaquest Bowl Vs Illinois - December 31st
There isn't anything wrong with the Reliaquest Bowl but, if LSU misses out on the College Football Playoff you'd like to at least see the Tigers in a different bowl game. LSU played in the Reliaquest Bowl last season beating the Wisconsin Badgers 35 - 31. The Reliaquest Bowl was formally known as the Outback Bowl and the Hall of Fame Bowl. The LSU Football program lost the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1989 to Syracuse, beat Iowa in the 2013 Outback Bowl, and won the 2023 Reliaquest Bowl. The Tigers MVP's in their wins have been Jeremy Hill and Garrett Nussmeier.
