Lane Kiffin faces the highest challenge of his coaching career in Baton Rouge, taking over the most prominent head coaching job he has ever had. And his LSU Tigers will be tested right out of the gate as they face the Clemson Tigers during the first week of the season.
Not only is LSU faced with a very legitimate opponent in Week 1, while so many other teams ease into their schedules against "cupcake" teams, but it will be in front of a huge audience. According to a report from Pete Nakos of On3, the set of ESPN College GameDay will be in town for the kickoff in Baton Rouge.
No pressure there, Lane.

Lane Kiffin and LSU could be visited by ESPN College GameDay multiple times in 2026
While this is going to be an exciting matchup between two teams that both claim the name of "Death Valley" for their respective home stadiums, it really is not surprising that GameDay chose to go here first for the 2026 season. Looking at the college football schedule for the first week of action, this is the only nationally notable contest taking place.
This is not expected to be the only time GameDay appears at a game Lane Kiffin coaches in 2026, either. Many predict that GameDay will head to Austin the following week to cover the battle between the Texas Longhorns and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Then, for Week 3, there are some real questions about which game to pick.
Could College GameDay get in on more LSU action just two weeks after it left Baton Rouge? That is not out of the question. And, if anything, it seems to be very much in the cards. Though there are other matchups of note featuring SEC teams taking place that week, like Auburn vs. Florida, it is hard to see a world where GameDay picks a game other than LSU vs. Ole Miss.
Unless Ole Miss has somehow managed to put on horrible performances against Louisville and Charlotte in its first two games of the season, both of which would be complete anomalies, everyone is going to be tuned in for the drama of Kiffin facing his former team. There's some bad blood there for many reasons.
Many did not take Kiffin's departure from Ole Miss, or the manner in which he did it, well. While a lot of the specific details were never made clear or are still conflicting to a degree, there were several people who viewed it as him walking out on a team that could have been a real national title game contender, just to make a somewhat lateral move to LSU.
Others would argue that it was a clear step up because of the level of prestige and history LSU holds that Ole Miss does not. Regardless, emotions will be running high when these two go head-to-head on Sept. 19 in Vaught Hemingway Stadium.
Kickoff time is yet to be determined, though it would be reasonable to assume this will be an evening game.
