Another big name has entered the college football transfer portal. On3 has reported that Florida Gators QB DJ Lagway plans to enter the portal and look for a new opportunity outside of Gainesville.
Lane Kiffin's latest coaching hire has a tough task ahead for the 2026 season
The move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Lagway initially stated that he planned to stay at Florida after Billy Napier was fired. But now, the Gator QB plans to leave the Gators via the portal.
Should Lane Kiffin and LSU pursue the dual-threat QB? Lagway has plenty of upside, but there is still a lot to be cautious about.

LSU and Lane Kiffin need to be cautious when pursuing DJ Lagway
Lagway is a former 5-star recruit, and was ranked as the No. 1 dual-threat QB in the country for the 2024 recruiting class. He appeared in 12 games for the Gators as a true freshman last season, and took over as Florida's QB1 following a season-ending injury to Graham Mertz.
Lagway showed plenty of promise, and even looked elite at times. However, he struggled with consistency, turnovers, and decision-making. Despite his struggles, Florida fans thought they were watching their quarterback of the future.
But things did not go as planned for Lagway in 2025. Turnovers plagued Lagway all season long, as he threw nearly as many interceptions (14) as touchdowns (16). Tiger fans are quite familiar with Lagway's turnover problems, as he threw a whopping five interceptions against LSU at Tiger Stadium back on September 13. In two seasons at Florida, Lagway completed 62.0% of his passes for 4,179 yards and 28 touchdowns with 23 interceptions.
Lane Kiffin has a way of getting the best out of his quarterbacks, so there's certainly a chance he looks into bringing Lagway to Baton Rouge. But Lagway has looked overwhelmed by SEC defenses throughout his collegiate career. His poor decision-making led to far too many turnovers, and led Florida to a 2025 season in which they didn't even qualify for a bowl game.
The LSU fan base is hungry to compete in the College Football Playoff with a shot at another National Championship. From what we've seen so far in his career, it's tough to imagine Lagway being the guy to lead the Tigers to that level. But Kiffin has worked wonders with Division II transfer Trinidad Chambliss this season, so it will be interesting to see if a Kiffin/Lagway partnership does indeed happen.
