LSU earns statement win in more ways than one to end Texas' undefeated season

After breezing through the non-conference slate to a 15-0 record in which they posted an average margin of victory of 55.4 points per game, the LSU women's basketball program suffered back-to-back losses to begin SEC play. The consecutive losses to No. 11 Kentucky and No. 12 Vanderbilt brought some concern to Tiger fans, but LSU's latest victory raised eyebrows across the country.

Kim Mulkey and company got back on track with an impressive 70-65 win over No. 2 Texas on Sunday afternoon. It's LSU's first win against a ranked opponent this season, and Mulkey's first SEC win over a top-5 team at LSU. The Tigers were previously 0-7 against top-5 SEC teams in the Mulkey era. Furthermore, it's LSU's first win over an AP-Top 2 team since 2008.

It was a much-needed win for Mulkey's squad, who once again proved they are National Championship contenders this season. Not only is it the first loss of the season for the Longhorns, but LSU is just the second team to score 70 points against Texas so far this season.

Mikaylah Williams led the way with a well-rounded effort for the Tigers. The junior guard totaled 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting (53.9%), while also collecting 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals on the afternoon. On the season, Williams is averaging 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. She is also shooting a strong 53.6% from the floor.

Other Tiger scorers in double-digits included Jada Richard (10), Flau'jae Johnson (10), ZaKiyah Johnson (10), and MiLaysia Fulwiley (10). LSU leads the country in points per game with 101.8, and boasts 6 players averaging double-digit points per game.

The Tigers now have a full week off before heading to Oklahoma to face the 5th-ranked Sooners on Sunday, January 18. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. CT.
