The search in finding a new LSU Football head coach is not even two weeks in the works, but fireworks have already been flying. It's been a busy by week for the LSU Football program, who is preparing to take on No. 4 Alabama this Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. Associate head coach and running backs coach Frank Wilson takes over on an interim basis, but Tiger fans are anxious for further developments in the search of finding Brian Kelly's full-time replacement.

Why LSU fans are breathing a sigh of relief ahead of the Alabama game

Preston Guy of TigerBait.com has reported that among the names to watch in the LSU coaching search is Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. Schumann took over as Georgia's defensive coordiantor in 2024 after serving as the co-DC and inside linebackers coach since 2019.

Could Glenn Schumann be LSU's next head coach?

Schumann began his coaching career as a student assistant at Alabama in 2008. He was then a graduate assistant for the Crimson Tide from 2011-14. Schumann then joined Kirby Smart's staff at Georgia as the inside linebackers coach in 2016. He held that role until 2019 when he became Georgia's co-defensive coordinator and ultimately got the sole DC role in 2024.

In Year 9 on Kirby Smart's staff and Year 2 as his sole DC, the next move in Schumann's career could be the move to head coach. New LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry said that previous head coaching experience is preferred, but not necessarily a requirement. That could open the door for Schumann, and LSU is arguably the best landing spot in all of college football. It's also worth mentioning that Schumann has been linked to the opening at Florida as well.

Schumann is a proven winner. He's been a part of 6 national championship teams on the staffs of Nick Saban at Alabama and Kirby Smart at Georgia. That is certinaly appealing, which is undoubtedly why his name is floating around. At age 35, having 6 national titles on your resume is certainly a plus.

However, Georgia fans aren't thrilled with the job Schumann has done since taking over as the Bulldogs' sole defensive coordinator. The Georgia defense has regressed since Schumann took the reins, and hasn't looked like the dominant Bulldog defenses that fans are used to seeing under Smart. Regardless, Schumann's name continues to make the rounds on head coaching hot boards, and is a situation worth monitoring in the coming weeks.
