In the modern era of College Football nothing is set in stone as schools and athletic departments are constantly changing their plans to keep with the everchanging sport. As questions linger about Conference schedules and College Football Playoff formatting, it's impossible to say which games will be played a year from now let alone 4 or 5 years down the line.
Despite the chance that the schedule could overgo a massive change if Conferences change their plans, the LSU Football program scheduled their season openers for the 2028 and 2029 series setting a Home and Home series with SMU.
News: LSU and SMU have scheduled a home-and-home series for Labor Day weekend in 2028-29.

2028: Sept. 2, Baton Rouge
2029: Sept. 1, Dallas
Barring LSU changing it's schedule, the Tigers will continue their stretch of opening the season against Power 4 opponents. In 2025 and 2026, LSU will open the season against the Clemson Tigers of the ACC. In 2028 and 2029 LSU now adds SMU to its planned opponents along with Rice, McNeese, and Arizona State already on the schedule for 2028.
The Mustangs are coming off of a trip to the first 12 team College Football Playoff and appear poised to remain in contention for the years to come based off of their ability on the NIL front. The LSU Football program has made it a priority to face off against Texas based schools as the Tigers will open the 2027 season in NRG Stadium against Houston. Traveling to these games will only help LSU as it puts them in front of some of Texas' top recruits.
An interesting aspect regarding the timing of the announcement is an off the field recruiting battle between SMU and LSU. This weekend, SMU flipped LSU commit and Louisiana native Jakai Anderson in what is a massive recruiting win for the Mustangs. If Anderson holds his commitment and doesn't transfer by 2028 he'll end up facing off against the LSU Tigers.
