The decision to fire Brian Kelly has caused a sequence of fireworks for the LSU Football program. It's been a bumpy ride both on and off the field since Kelly was shown the door following LSU's 49-25 loss to Texas A&M two weeks ago. The Tigers fell to 5-4 on the season on Saturday night with a 29-0 loss to Alabama this past weekend.

As the dust continues to swirl rather than settle following Kelly's firing, LSU is feeling the heat on the recruiting trail. The program has suffered its first recruiting blow since Kelly's firing, as 4-star EDGE DeAnthony Lafayette has decommitted from the Tigers.

Lafayette hails from Orlando, FL, and is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 42 player in the state of Florida and the No. 34 EDGE in the country for the 2026 class. The 6'1" 230-pound prospect originally committed to LSU over the summer on July 10. He chose LSU over other offers from Miami (FL), Oklahoma, USF, and Vanderbilt, among others.

With his recruitment opened back up, industry experts already have a new home in mind for Lafayette. According to 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, Miami (FL) is predicated to be the new home for Lafayette. The move would make sense, as the Hurricanes were heavily involved in Lafayette's recruitment the first time around, and he is an in-state product hailing from Orlando.

Recruits deciding to decommit after the firing of a head coach is not unusual, and something that was most likely going to happen to LSU. The good news is that it's been 2 weeks since Kelly's firing and this is the first instance in which it has happened to the Tigers. Several 2026 commits have taken to social media to proclaim their steadfast commitment to LSU, which certainly bodes well for the program.

As it stands, LSU has the 12th-ranked recruiting class in the country according to 247Sports. A total of 11 coaches have been fired so far this season, which means that LSU can also look to bring in players who have committed to those teams. All in all, the landscape around LSU Football recruiting is going to be interesting to watch over the next several months.
