The LSU Tigers are taking an interesting new approach to add depth to their running back room. After spending Monday's practice at running back, sophomore jack-of-all-trades Ju'Juan Johnson has emerged as a contender for a share of time in LSU's backfield.

The indefinite suspension of freshman running back JT Lindsey leaves LSU's running back room with little depth. Entering a 2025 season with lofty expectations, the Tigers are down to just three scholarship running backs: returnees Caden Durham and Kaleb Jackson, and incoming freshman Harlem Berry. Durham was LSU's leading rusher with 753 yards and six touchdowns on 140 carries last season. Jackson totaled 150 yards on 44 carries.

Johnson's extreme versatility could come in clutch for the Tigers. So far this offseason, the Lafayette native has taken snaps at quarterback, wide receiver, and now, running back. That's after seeing time on the defensive side of the ball as a safety during his rookie season last year. With LSU's running back room thirsty for depth, Johnson could be the answer.

Johnson's electric playmaking ability can help LSU, if he isn't redshirted

Johnson shined at Lafayette Christian Academy before coming to Baton Rouge. There, he set the Louisiana High School Athletic Association record for total yards (14,451) and touchdowns (171). He is a gifted playmaker who is dangerous with the ball in his hands no matter what position he is playing. LSU has plenty of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, and finding a way to creatively utilize Johnson is an interesting task for offensive coordinator Joe Sloan.

But, there is one question that looms large when it comes to Ju'Juan Johnson this season: Will he be redshirted? After appearing in all 13 games last season, head coach Brian Kelly stated that he is open to redshirting Johnson.

"Whatever happens with Ju'Juan, he's going to play four games, the question is he going to play five? That will be dictated as he performs and the offense kind of works around him. But we love him and what he's doing for our program.

It seems that Kelly is challenging Johnson to "wow" the coaching staff leading up to the season's first four games. Then, his play will determine his status. If he shines in his new role, Johnson could work his way into elevated playing time.
