It really is sweet to be heading to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year, and the LSU Tigers are dancing all the way to Spokane next week, where they will now take on 2-seed NC State. The LSU women's basketball did more than take care of business against 6-seed Florida State with a dominant 101-71 win over the Seminoles.
It seemed like the Seminoles had figured out this LSU squad as these teams went into halftime 50-49 with the Tigers just narrowly leading. However, head coach Kim Mulkey's squad came out with a new kind of fire in the second half and outscored FSU 51-22 in the second half. It was all thanks to an elite third quarter where LSU held Florida State to just six points and scored 31 themselves.
Even though Florida State's star player, Ta'Niya Latson, went off for 30 points, LSU's offense was just too much for the Seminoles to handle. Mikaylah Williams led the way for LSU with 28 points, but she was followed closely behind by Annesah Morrow with 26 and Sa'Myah Smith with 20 points.
LSU was killer from the floor, shooting an impressive 56.2%, and held Florida State to just 35.5% from the floor. Free throws also made a huge difference as the Tigers went 16-for-17 from the strip, and Florida State went just 9-for-16. However, the real struggle for Florida State was their three-point shot, where they went just 8-for-34 from deep range.
This will be the third straight season that LSU makes the trip to the Sweet 16 under Mulkey, and the last time the Tigers were a 3-seed was two years ago when they won the National Championship. The team that took the court today looked like a team that could win it all they played with aggressive defense and sharper-shooter offense.
The Tigers will take on 2-seed NC State in Spokane in the Sweet 16 on Friday, March 28. Times for the games will be released at a later date. Check back for more information on LSU's Sweet 16 matchup.
