In a season that has gone sideways in just about every way imaginable, the LSU Tigers were able to salvage some positivity with a 23-22 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday afternoon. LSU has now won nine of the last ten meetings with Arkansas, as Frank Wilson picked up an emotional first win as LSU's interim head coach.

LSU's quarterback situation remained in flux all week heading into Saturday's matchup with the Razorbacks. Garrett Nussmeier has been battling an abdominal injury all season long, and he suffered a setback during Thursday's practice. As kick-off drew nearer, it was announced that backup Michael Van Buren would be getting his first start at LSU. Van Buren made the most of his opportunity, putting together a well-rounded performance that helped the Tigers become bowl eligible.

On the day, Van Buren completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts for 221 yards. He threw one touchdown and didn't throw an interception. He also added 36 rushing yards on 10 carries. It wasn't the flashiest stat line, but it was exactly what LSU needed.

His favorite target was WR Zavion Thomas, who led the Tigers with six catches for 80 yards. Van Buren's biggest play of the day came in the 4th quarter when he delivered the eventual game-winning touchdown pass to TE Bauer Sharp from 12 yards out.

Van Buren brings a dynamic skill set to the Tiger offense that Nussmeier doesn't have. Van Buren is much more elusive and mobile than Nussmeier, which opens up the playbook a bit more. He was able to extend plays with his legs throughout the game, which kept options open down the field.

Perhaps most importantly, Van Buren did not turn the ball over at all. His strong performance helped LSU snap a three-game losing streak, and extended Arkansas' losing streak to eight.

It remains to be seen how long Nussmeier will be sidelined with his abdominal injury. It has been bothering him all season long, and while he's been able to play through it, it's clear that he hasn't been comfortable. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are up next for LSU next weekend, and then a road tilt at Oklahoma closes out the regular season.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Van Buren get the start down the stretch, although Nussmeier's status is certainly worth monitoring through the upcoming week. With his impressive performance against the Razorbacks, LSU fans have to feel confident with the Mississippi State transfer leading the Tiger offense.
