National Championship odds: LSU being behind this SEC team makes no sense

The LSU Tigers are by no means the title favorites, but being behind this other SEC team in the National Championship odds market makes no sense.

The National Championship odds board has already seen several shakeups this season. As the college football season enters Week 7, several frontrunners are emerging. Via BetMGM Sportsbook, Ohio State is the current title favorite with odds of +425. Oregon (+500), Alabama (+700), and Miami (FL) (+800) aren't far behind.

Georgia (+1000) and Oklahoma (+1500) round out the top-6, but Texas at the No. 7 spot with odds of +1600 makes little sense. LSU is tied for 10th on the list with odds of +2500.

LSU being behind Texas on the National Championship odds board makes no sense

The Longhorns already have two losses, and their three wins have come against San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston. And somehow that gives them the seventh-best odds to win the National Championship entering Week 7. LSU suffered a road loss to Ole Miss, who is now the No. 4 team in the country. LSU also has wins at Clemson and vs Florida, and while those teams have plenty of issues, those wins are better than any of Texas' three wins. The AP Poll agrees, as Texas is on the outside looking in while LSU holds the No. 11 spot entering Week 7.

The Longhorns and Tigers also have a common opponent in the Florida Gators. LSU defeated Florida 20-10 thanks to a stellar defensive effort that resulted in five interceptions of DJ Lagway. Texas lost to Florida 29-21 this past weekend, and was thoroughly out-gained by a margin of 457-351. Yet, Texas is still several spots ahead of LSU in the National Championship odds board.

Arch Manning has looked overwhelmed in just about every game this season, and has already thrown five interceptions through five games. The Texas defense has been strong, ranking second in the SEC with 12.0 points allowed per game. LSU ranks third in the conference with 12.2 points allowed per game.

Manning's struggles have drastically limited Texas' ability early on this season. Garrett Nussmeier has also seen his fair share of struggles, but unlike Manning, Nussmeier has shown he can excel in the SEC. Nussmeier threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns last season while leading the SEC in completions. Manning simply hasn't proven himself yet. Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that Nussmeier has been playing through injury this season, battling a torso issue.

The LSU Tigers have a lot to correct if they want to content for a national title, but Texas being this far ahead of them in the current odds market doesn't make much sense. LSU is back in action this Saturday, hosting South Carolina at Tiger Stadium.
