This weekend, the future of LSU's quarterback room took a massive hit as Bryce Underwood made the decision to flip his commitment from LSU to Michigan. The move gives LSU little time to land a quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class which means in all likelihood, LSU will pursue a transfer quarterback. The decision by Underwood hurts LSU but, things could have been much worse if not for a small decision a few years ago.
When Ed Orgeron was fired and Brad Davis took over the job as the Head Coach for LSU's Bowl Game at the end of the 2021 season, the Tigers had a quarterback dilemma. Myles Brennan was still recovering from an injury, Max Johnson made the decision to transfer, and Garrett Nussmeier would burn his redshirt if he decided to play.
LSU fans weren't happy with the decision and in the attend it truly didn't matter as Kansas State's offense ran all over the Tigers defense. The decision allowed Garrett Nussmeier one extra season at LSU which will be the 2025 season.
If Garrett Nussmeier had no eligibility left, this would be a much worse situation for the LSU Football team. The Tigers would be looking at starting AJ Swann, Rickie Collins, or Colin Hurley next season with only Swann having starting experience. The other decision for LSU would be to pursue a top transfer quarterback but, that would also give you no guarantee of coming out of the portal successfully.
Garrett Nussmeier returning is vital for LSU
Earlier this season, it started to look like Garrett Nussmeier may be a one and done as LSU's starter as he was flying up the draft boards. As things currently stand, Garrett Nussmeier is the 5th ranked quarterback in the draft according to Mel Kiper. If team's are looking for a more traditional quarterback rather than a dual threat player Nussmeier is at or near the top of that list. Getting Nussmeier back would be massive for LSU as he'd have a full year of experience under his belt and could take a massive jump.
