5 LSU Olympic Winners From the First Week of the Paris Olympics
LSU has 31 current and former athletes competing in the Paris Olympics, representing 20 countries in 6 sports. While some of LSU's most famous alumni, Mondo Duplantis and Sha'Carri Richardson, will be featured in track and field events in week two, scroll for a list of LSU Tigers who competed successfully in the first week of the games.
1. Brooks Curry
Former LSU swimming star Brooks Curry brought home his second olympic medal, a silver, for being a part of the team that placed second in the men's 4x200 meter relay race. Brooks won a gold medal for the same event in the Tokyo games, and later joined the LSU program, winning double national titles in the 50 meter and 100 meter freestyle races in 2022.
2. Taryn Kloth & Kristen Nuss
Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth are still in the hunt for their first Olympic medal and remain the gold medal favorites after racing through the first week of the tournament undefeated in pool play. The duo joined forces on the sand at LSU, after Nuss had already established herself as a program legend. After partnering with Kloth for their senior season, the two went a perfect 36-0 and defied the usual Olympic path by continuing to train together with their coach in Louisiana during their Olympic qualifying run. They will look to remain undefeated as they enter the knockout round of 16 this week.
3. Juan Celaya-Hernandez
Competing for his home country of Mexico with diving partner Osmar Olvera, Juan Celaya-Hernandez won the silver medal in the men's 3 meter synchronized dive competition after just missing the podium at the Tokyo Olympics. Celaya-Hernandez is one of the most decorated divers in LSU history, a 7 time SEC Champion holding school records in the 1 meter, 3 meter, and platform events for LSU.
4. Tremont Waters
Former LSU basketball star Tremont Waters has competed for the Puerto Rican National Team since he was a teenager. Although his team was knocked out in the round of 16 by Team USA, Waters performed admirably averaging 10 points in 20 minutes per game. Waters is best known for leading LSU to the Sweet 16 in the 2019 March Madness tournament, hitting the game winning shot in the round of 32 against the Number 6 Seed Maryland.
5. Maggie MacNeil
Former LSU swimmer Maggie MacNeil competed for Team Canada's strong program in multiple events, finishing 5th in the 100 meter butterfly, and 4th in the women's 4x100 medley relay. Although she finished just off the podium in these games, MacNeil is a 3 time olympic medalist and will look to build on her international success in the 2028 Olympic Games. As a graduate transfer, MacNeil was an integral part of the LSU team that dominated the 2023 SEC Championship Meet in both individual and team races.
