Brian Kelly is shaking up the LSU Football team's secondary
The LSU Football team was in an interesting place in week two against Nicholls State to experiment with some changes in the defensive backfield. Jardin Gilbert was suspended for the first half due to his targeting foul at the end of the game against USC. The Tigers had an opening at safety and we all expected to see Dashawn Spears and Kylin Jackson filling in for Gilbert.
Instead, the LSU Football team moved Sage Ryan back to safety to start the game after he spent the Summer working as a cornerback. When Brian Kelly spoke to the media on Monday, he confirmed that Ryan would be sticking at safety as it's his best position with Zy Alexander getting healthier at cornerback.
We can now expect to see a heavy workload at cornerback for true freshman PJ Woodland who has been impressive through two games. Woodland will be a massive piece for this team in 2024 and beyond and the best way to progress him is to get him as much game experience as possible.
The player we'll likely see the most of opposite Ashton Stamps however, may be Zy Alexander. We finally got to see Alexander return to the field and even though Kelly hinted that he'd only appear on special teams, he did see some time at cornerback and impressed.
In his return to game action Alexander was targeted five times allowing just two catches for five yards while breaking up a pair of passes. There is plenty to like about Alexander's game especially given his experience as he started eight games in 2023.
Still some tinkering with the secondary left to be done
The LSU Football team is far from set in the secondary and if you pay close enough attention against South Carolina, you'll likely see a number of players getting reps at each position. The Star position has been one which hasn't panned out as LSU would've hoped when they moved Major Burns closer to the line of scrimmage. Ashton Stamps didn't have his best showing against Nicholls State and we may see a drive or two where PJ Woodland and Zy Alexander are paired up on the boundaries. Moving Ryan back to safety means either Jordan Allen or Jardin Gilbert will sit or we'll continue to see rotations at safety. These are moves you hope the team can figure out especially before the team plays Ole Miss but, LSU has the talent in the room to field a much better secondary.
