It is the start of MLB Draft Day for several LSU Tigers
Sunday Night at 7 PM Eastern Time kicks off the start of the 2024 MLB Draft as the league heads into its All Star Break. On Sunday, thirty players will hear their names called as first-round picks in the draft while 74 players will be selected on the first night between the first two rounds and competitive balance picks.
The 2023 MLB Draft was dominated by the LSU Baseball program as Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews headlined the draft going first and second overall. The opening day of the MLB Draft will certainly see one former LSU Tiger selected while a few players will be on the edge of their seats waiting to hear their names called.
The player most likely to hear his name called from the LSU Baseball team is none other than Tommy "Tanks" White. MLB's Top 250 Prospect list ranks White as the 20th-ranked player in this year's draft class. The team that Tommy White has been linked to the most is the Toronto Blue Jays with the 20th Overall Pick as they have uncertainty with their first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Other teams to watch for Tommy White are the Yankees at 26, the Phillies at 27, and the Orioles at 32.
The College Pitcher that could sneak his way into the top 30 is LSU Starter Luke Holman who MLB ranks as the 45th best player in the class. If Holman slide into the second round he could be joined by Gage Jump (Ranked 62nd), Thatcher Hurd (114th), Jared Jones (119th), and Griffin Herring (157th).
The MLB Draft will be important for the LSU Baseball team heading into the 2025 season. Jay Johnson will be rooting for his players but, it may be in his best interest if a few of his former players slide down the draft board. If Gage Jump, Griffin Herring, and Jared Jones get selected later than they hope, all three could return to the LSU Baseball team with the hope of improving their draft stock.
