Shortly after destroying Coppin State 80-48, Kim Mulkey admitted her idea that LSU should play an outdoor women’s basketball game in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers head coach also claimed she had “preliminary talks” with LSU President William Tate regarding her idea.
Recently, 55,646 fans packed Kinnick Stadium to watch the Iowa women’s basketball team play DePaul. Also, 92,003 fans watched a women’s volleyball game inside Nebraska football’s Memorial Stadium.
Indeed, fans are showing out to support women’s sports and the outdoor games are fantastic for promoting college athletes.
Star forward Angel Reese recently posted (tweeted) her thoughts on playing an outdoor basketball game in Death Valley.
The potential for an outdoor women’s basketball game in Tiger Stadium would not open until the 2024-25 season. Considerations ranging from scheduling to weather and protecting the natural grass surface in the stadium require advanced and careful planning.
Tiger Stadium turns 100 years old in 2024, and LSU is planning for much celebration. Thus, an outdoor women’s basketball game may be included. Such a contest can not be played any sooner than LSU football’s final home game against Oklahoma on November 30.
Such affords planners a month to squeeze in an outdoor game before LSU women’s basketball begins their conference schedule in January 2025.
We won’t know the entire 2024-25 LSU women’s basketball schedule until September 2024. Regardless, Mulkey hopes her Tigers can play Southern University inside Tiger Stadium and in front of 102,321 fans.
