LSU Football lands it's first Spring transfer in defensive tackle Jay'Viar Suggs
Nearly a month after the NCAA's Spring Transfer Portal window opened, the LSU Tigers are finally on the board with their first incoming transfer. Grand Valley State defensive tackle Jay'Viar Suggs has committed to Brian Kelly and the LSU Football team giving the defensive tackle room a much-needed addition. Suggs joins the LSU Football team with two years of eligibility remaining.
For Grand Valley State in 2023, Suggs recorded 21 tackles, five sacks, and four pass breakups showing a solid pass rush ability with three sacks in 2022. Brian Kelly's connections at Grand Valley State likely played a massive role in landing Suggs as Brian Kelly coached the Lakers from 1991-2003. Kelly's son Kenzel Kelly played alongside Suggs while at Grand Valley State as well.
The Tigers won this battle late, offering a scholarship after Suggs named a final six of USC, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Florida State, and Kentucky. Landing Suggs was massive as the team swung and missed on several defensive tackle targets as Brian Kelly said the team wasn't in the market of "buying players".
Suggs will now slot in alongside Jacobian Guillory as the two starting defensive tackles for the defense. The Tigers may not be done shopping either as the team hosted Stephen F Austin transfer defensive tackle Brandon Lane on an unofficial visit on Mother's Day. The Tigers are also in play for former Tennesse players Wesley Walker and Tyler Baron.
Time for Bo Davis to work his magic
When the LSU Football team went out and brought in Bo Davis this off-season, it was for his ability to recruit and develop players. Bo Davis will have the priority of developing defensive tackles this Summer. Jay'Viar Suggs and incoming freshman Dominick McKinley both will need an expedited course from Davis and will likely continue to get better as the season goes along. If Davis can get the duo up to speed then a position that was once a massive concern could become a strength again.
