LSU Football team flips Texas commit Kade Phillips at cornerback
When Kade Phillips committed to the Texas Longhorns over the LSU Tigers in early July it came as a bit of surprise. The Longhorns are the in-state school but, LSU did an incredible job with the recruitment of Phillips the first time around and it felt like the Tigers were set to land Phillips.
The two sides have stayed engaged and it seemed like LSU was going to do everything it could to get Phillips to Baton Rouge this fall to pull off a flip before National Signing Day. The Tigers however, made this a recruitment we saw flipping the Tigers way before the start of the season.
The biggest difference in LSU and Texas' pitches was the position each team saw Phillips playing as LSU recruited him as a cornerback while Texas sees him as a safety. It came as a surprise that Texas viewed him as a safety and left the door open for LSU and Corey Raymond to land Phillips.
Since Phillips's initial commitment, LSU's pitch had only gotten stronger than it was originally. The Tigers the first time around had no commitments in the secondary, they now have the top cornerback in the country on board along with safeties CJ Jimcoily and Jhase Thomas, and they sit in a great spot with several other players.
The deciding factor in this recruitment, was likely be how each school has recruited his position. The Texas Longhorns remain engaged with several top safeties including Jonah Williams who will decide later this month. The Tigers have pushed hard for Phillips at cornerback and he's been one of Corey Raymond's top targets the entire cycle.
Phillips is ranked by On3 as the 7th-ranked cornerback in the class and the 65th best recruit in the class. LSU is now neck and neck with Alabama for the Nation's second ranked recruiting class.
Corey Raymond has arrived on the scene!
Earlier in this recruiting cycle, some Tigers fans were very down on Corey Raymond and his ability to recruit. Since that point, Corey Raymond has landed DJ Pickett and Kade Phillips giving LSU Football a top ten tandem at cornerback in this recruiting class. If Raymond still has his touch as a player development coach, he'll be the biggest addition LSU could have asked for this off-season.
