LSU will enter Thursday night as underdogs despite entering the 2023-24 season as the reigning women’s college basketball national champions and preseason No. 1.
Kim Mulkey’s squad was poised for a significant run at a back-to-back title after adding star transfers Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow via the transfer portal. The LSU women’s basketball team also added a massive frontcourt presence in the 2023 recruit, 6-6 center Aaliyah Del Rosario.
Unfortunately, chemistry issues and sophomore Sa’Myah Smith’s season-ending injury resulted in early struggles. Mulkey also temporarily benched Angel Reese for unknown problems. Such was heavily speculated to be academic, but later revealed by Reese as mental health-related.
The Tigers are currently 5-1 in SEC play, with their only loss at Auburn 10 days ago. On the other side of the floor, Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks are unbeaten and clobbering practically every opponent. South Carolina’s last five games were won by an average score of 90-57.
Earning the win on Thursday requires LSU’s best game of the season. And should the Tigers upset South Carolina, Mulkey is not interested in seeing fans storm the court.
Tickets for the much-anticipated matchup are currently no cheaper than $74 on many resale markets. Sitting close to the court ranges from $250 to $1,493.
We can expect an electric atmosphere inside the PMAC on Thursday.
