The difference between Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley's postgame comments will shock you
At this point, we all know what went down at the SEC Women's Basketball Championship yesterday. There was a fight toward the end of the game that resulted in six players getting ejected, and one, Kamilla Cardoso, getting ejected for fighting. Cardoso will now not be eligible for the Gamecocks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
After the game, Dawn Staley was interviewed as the winning coach, and she immediately took the time to apologize for her team's behavior and explain that that isn't how thier program runs.
In her post-game press conference, Kim Mulkey had a different response, one that might have shocked viewers.
Sure, Staley said all the right things when it comes to PR, but if I am a player, I love how Mulkey is going to stand behind me and won't just say "we all failed."
While there is no need for fighting on the court, would you rather have your coach say everyone was completely wrong, or would you rather have your coach have your back? Mulkey talked about how no one wants to be a part of something like what happened on the court, but if you were not a part of the original fight, then stay out of it.
The hit by Cardoso was completely uncalled for, she was not a part of the original foul or anything that initially took place. Things escalated a lot more when Cardoso came in and hit Flau'jae Johnson, knocking her to the floor.
Mulkey is getting a lot of heat for her response on social media while everyone is praising Staley for her perfect PR response. However, we all know this is who Mulkey is, she is going to fiercely protect her girls and tell them how it is.
If you are calling Mulkey classless after her postgame response, then you don't know her as a coach at all. Sure her response doesn't sound great, but I am sure Tiger fans are happy to see her stand up for her team.
