The LSU Football team dominates South Alabama but, its still not a clean game
The LSU Tigers head into the bye week on a four game winning streak as LSU handled South Alabama with ease.
The game couldn't have started any better for LSU as the Tigers scored on their first play from scrimmage for the first time since 1982 on a Caden Durham 71-yard screen for a score. The LSU defense then forced a three and out which was a much-welcomed change setting up an 86-yard run from Caden Durham before Garrett Nussmeier scored on a QB sneak.
The Tigers continued their defensive dominance while Garrett Nussmeier and Caden Durham each fought their way to their second touchdowns of the game.
After running for a pair of touchdowns, Garrett Nussmeier quickly remembered that he's a passer firing a bullet to Mason Taylor which set LSU up to score on a 23-yard strike from Nussmeier. The lone mistake by LSU in the first half came on a Garrett Nussmeier interception where the ball came out weird.
While the first half was nearly perfect, the Tigers started to slip in the third quarter looking very uninspired. The Tigers let South Alabama score as Major Burns slipped in coverage while drops and an interception kept the offense off the board.
The Tigers started to click again in the fourth quarter, Garrett Nussmeier found Kyren Lacy on a 35-yard strike which set LSU up to score on a four-yard rush by Josh Williams capping off a 99-yard drive.
Overall, there was little to be excited about in the second half as LSU only scored seven points while South Alabama scored seven. The Tigers did get a ton of younger players involved in this game and some of the backups as Rickie Collins closed this game out at quarterback.
The big takeaway from this game
This game wasn't going to prove much to us as LSU should beat South Alabama anytime the teams lineup. The Tigers on defense without their best cornerback Zy Alexander handled business holding a South Alabama team that has been on a heater to 10 points. On offense, the emergence of Caden Durham has to be the biggest reason for optimism as he looks like the best back we've seen under Brian Kelly. The Nussmeier interceptions were ugly and LSU didn't do much in the second half but, they didn't truly step on the pedal.
