Is playing Harold Perkins at linebacker the right decision?

The 2023 season saw the LSU Football team move Harold Perkins move from a more traditional edge rushing role to an off-ball linebacker role. Perkins went from one of the most impressive edge rushers as a true freshman to an effective linebacker but, with a lesser effect than he had at edge rusher.

Heading into the 2024 season, the LSU staff will keep Perkins at linebacker rather than moving him back to edge rusher. If you're Brian Kelly and even the defensive coordinator Blake Baker you have to be wondering if keeping Perkins at Linebacker is the right decision for the team.

If LSU deployed Harold Perkins at edge rusher it could help the rest of the defense as he can wreck the game and cause the opponent to scheme to stop Perkins. At linebacker, Perkins can affect more but, teams aren't scheming to avoid him as much while his impact is limited by not rushing the passer.

In playing Harold Perkins at linebacker, the LSU Football team has an incredibly athletic player who will be one of the better players at linebacker. However, if LSU deployed Perkins at edge rusher, there are few players better than him and opponents having to focus their blocking schemes on him would make the defense as a whole much superior.
