Three Storylines to follow as LSU Football's Summer camp gets underway
This week, the LSU Football team begins its summer camp in preparation for the 2024 season. The Tigers have varying expectations entering the season as some experts predict a College Football Playoff appearance while others predict a so-so year. A lot of the questions about this LSU Football team will be answered during camp as we get a real feel for the depth chart. Here are the three things to watch for as LSU begins camp.
How the incoming freshmen look
This Spring, we got to see several of the teams' incoming true freshmen as the early enrollees joined the team for practices. This group of players will look to continue their progression as several of the players will be in contention for starting roles or playing time.
The more interesting group of players to keep an eye on are the players that will practice for the first time. This group features some of LSU's biggest signees such as five-defensive tackle Dominick McKinley, four-stars Trey'Dez Green, Kylan Billiot, and Caden Durham among several other key recruits. The biggest thing to watch for is where these players land in the rotations as that will indicate how high the staff is on these players.
Where the transfer defensive linemen land in the rotation
This spring, the LSU Football team scoured the transfer portal for defensive tackles after the team lost Mekhi Wingo, Maason Smith, and Jordan Jefferson to the NFL Draft. The Tigers landed Wisconsin transfer Gio Paez early on before reeling in Grand Vally State's Jay'Viar Suggs. The defensive tackle room will be a rotation this season which will make it interesting where the transfers land to start camp. Paez is viewed as the player that's more ready to play having started in the Big Ten while Jay'Viar Suggs will likely need more time to develop.
Starting rotations at Wide Receiver and Defensive Back
The LSU Football team has nearly all if its started locked in but, there are two groups to watch. At Wide Receiver, we could easily see five wide receivers earn starting roles. Kyren Lacy will certainly be a starter while it'll be interesting to see who fills in alongside him. CJ Daniels, Chris Hilton, Aaron Anderson, and Zavion Thomas all enter camp with high expectations while there are younger players that could provide a challenge.
At defensive back, the rotation will be something serious to follow this Summer at camp. At Cornerback it could be anyone's job to win as Ashton Stamps will start on one side while on the other side PJ Woodland, JK Johnson, Jyaire Brown, and Zy Alexander could all earn the starting nod.
The expectation at safety is that Major Burns will start at the star position while Sage Ryan and Jardin Gilbert will start deep. The projected starters do have some massive challengers as LSU signed impressive freshmen Dashawn Spears and Joel Rogers as Spears had an impressive Spring. At the Star position, Kylin Jackson looked the part this Spring and could challenge Burns if he struggles early on.
