As we enter the Month of August, we're officially in the portion of the off-season where the Pre-Season watchlists will be announced for the upcoming season. Today, The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list for the 88th Annual Maxwell Award. The Maxwell Award is given to the most outstanding player in College Football, its been given out every year since 1937 named after Robert "Tiny" Maxwell.

The LSU Football team has had just one winner of the Award which Joe Burrow took home in 2019. This year, the LSU Football team has two players on the watchlist in Garrett Nussmeier and Kyren Lacy. The watchlist only contains offensive skill position players meaning that Harold Perkins and Will Campbell weren't snubbed as a defensive player hasn't won the award since Manti Te'o in 2012.

In Garrett Nussmeier, the LSU Football team has a clear candidate that will have a chance at winning the award. Nussmeier being in contention for any awards will be positive for LSU Football as his success will determine how far this team goes in 2024. In limited playing time, Garrett Nussmeier has impressed and we all expect he'll be one of the best quarterbacks in College Football this season.

Coming off of the 2023 season, Kyren Lacy has some of the highest expectations in the offense this year. Lacy was a key contributor catching 30 passes for 558 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2023. In 2024, Lacy will lead the receiving room and with Brian Thomas Jr and Malik Nabers in the NFL Lacy should get enough targets to put up a massive season.

The darkhorse candidates from LSU

Just because some of LSU's key players didn't make the cut, doesn't mean that they can't win the award. Tight End Mason taylor could lead the LSU offense in receiving which would in turn make him a top candidate for the Award. CJ Daniels was certainly a snub after being a 1,000 yard receiver last year and he'll put himself in the conversation for the Award. Everyone expects that LSU will be running back by committee but, if one player takes control of the backfield they'll enter the running behind this offensive line.
