This telling LSU football stat gives Lane Kiffin a definite bar to clear

LSU football fans have big expectations for Lane Kiffin in year one of his time in Baton Rouge. While improvement from Brian Kelly's disastrous tenure is expected, much more is probably hoped for.

It's not unreasonable for LSU to ever think about SEC Championships, College Football Playoff berths, or even national championships. That might seem like a ton of pressure on Kiffin, but that's also what being in the SEC is all about.

The good thing for coach Kiffin is that there's a clear bar for him to reach if he wants to achieve the ultimate of those goals. Lose less than three games, and you're off to a running start on hitting them all. Lose one game or less, and your chances seem to increase greatly.

If we dig into that stat further, it becomes even more revealing. Just looking at the CFP years:

2025: 5 reg. season losses, no SEC Championship Game, no playoff
2024: 4 reg. season losses, no SEC Championship Game, no playoff
2023: 3 reg. season losses, no SEC Championship Game, no playoff
2022: 3 reg. season losses, SEC Championship Game loss, no playoff

So clearly that three-loss benchmark means a lot. Losing three or more games is certainly going to remove you from playoff consideration, even in the expanded version, and could prevent you from even getting into the SEC Championshp Game and sliding into a playoff spot as the conference champs.

LSU's schedule is set up for Lane Kiffin to avoid that three-loss mark

Even though it's his first season, Lane Kiffin has already done a lot to improve this team. So is avoiding three losses in the cards in 2026?

The biggest potential losses for LSU in 2026 are:

Week 3 at Ole Miss
Week 10 vs Alabama
Week 11 vs Texas

That means LSU needs to pull of a win in at least one of those three games and avoid any missteps in games with a slightly lower risk against Clemson, Texas A&M, and Tennessee.

It may sound simple enough, but the SEC isn't a walk in the park for anyone. Even teams like Auburn, Arkansas, and Kentucky can be dangerous if you're looking past them or aren't focused.

So that said, two losses might (bordering on probably) get you into the SEC Championship Game, where you need a win to advance on to the playoff. One loss almost certainly gets you to Atlanta, with a strong chance of making the playoff even with a loss in the title game, and an undefeated regular season is probably a ticket into both.

That's the bar that has been set for Lane Kiffin in year one. No pressure, right?
