The college football transfer portal remains open as thousands of college football players are still seeking a new school prior to Summer camp. The LSU Football team has had a fairly quiet spring only losing one scholarship player in true freshman defensive tackle Dilan Battle along with walk on Javen Nicholas and John Emery Jr who LSU decided to move on from.
While Brian Kelly told LSU fans to expect a quiet Spring transfer portal cycle, the Tigers are starting to make some noise which is encouraging to hear. The two positions LSU fans have been hoping the Tigers will address are defensive tackle and safety as they're the two biggest needs on the defense. This week LSU started its attempt to plug the defensive tackle hole hosting top transfer defensive tackle Bernard Gooden.
As LSU looks to fill its hole at safety one recent transfer portal entry stands out as a true impact player that could start for the Tigers.
Houston Transfer AJ Haulcy should be a top target for LSU
Among the safeties still in the transfer portal, Houston safety AJ Haulcy should be a player the LSU Tigers make a serious run at. Among every player to transfer, including the winter window, Haulcy grades out as the 2nd best safety and the 12th ranked player overall according to On3's Transfer Portal rankings.
LSU fans with really good memories will remember AJ Haulcy from his Freshman season at New Mexico. LSU beat the Lobos in 2022 but, AJ Haulcy was the most impressive player for New Mexico racking up 10 tackles against the Tigers.
This season at Houston, AJ Haulcy showed the ability to be a ballhawk, intercepting 5 passes while racking up 74 tackles with 7 pass defenses. Adding Haulcy to LSU's defense would allow the Tigers to play Jardin Gilbert closer to the line of scrimmage, while Tamarcus Cooley could be a versatile chess piece for Blake Baker.
The safety position has been a massive hole for the LSU Football team during the past few seasons which stands out as a reason why LSU should jump on adding a piece like Haulcy. The Tigers have invested a ton of resources into this roster and if the staff feels like Haulcy could make a massive impact there's no reason why the Tigers shouldn't make a strong push. It'll be interesting to see how involved LSU gets and if the Tigers make the big swing to cap off an incredible year in the transfer portal.
