Midway through the third quarter, it looks like interim LSU football coach Frank Wilson has seen enough out of Garrett Nussmeier. Matter of fact, he lost patience with the signal-caller. Moments ago, plenty of people were shocked when Nussmeier was benched in favor of Michael Van Buren.
Fans are torching Garrett Nussmeier after he was benched in a close game
Nussmeier has been struggling getting the offense into a rhythm, as his 121 passing yards wasn't cutting it. Wilson, currently in charge after Brian Kelly was fired, was not happy with his QB. Shortly before Nussmeier was benched, the ABC cameras caught Wilson absolutely ripping into him:

LSU benched Garrett Nussmeier and Frank Wilson was clearly livid with him
At the time of his benching, LSU was down to Alabama 17-6. However, Nussmeier was making silly mental mistakes that Wilson and his staff had clearly seen enough of. What makes this all the more stunning is that no one ever thought this would be a possibility before the season started.
Not long ago this past summer, Nussmeier was widely considered a contender to win the Heisman Trophy. On top of that, plenty of people in Baton Rouge assumed that the Tigers would be able to make plenty of noise in the SEC and push for a CFP spot.
The opposite has been the case, as the Tigers entered the Saturday night showdown in Tuscaloosa with a 5-3 record. Kelly was fired following the loss to Texas A&M, with people actually calling for that to happen from the stands.
The hunt is now on for a new permanent head coach, but Wilson has injected new life into the program, and needed excitement. He's also clearly not scared to mix things up and make some calls that maybe Kelly wasn't ready to. That includes reminding his team that if you're not at your best at all times, you could lose your spot. That's what happened with Nussmeier, as he simply was not getting the job done for his team.
