LSU Weekend Recap: Final takeaways, recruiting news, and more
We're onto Nicholls State week after taking some time to relive the LSU Tigers' loss to USC in Las Vegas. While the Tigers were on the road there was a ton that happened on the recruiting trail and elsewhere to follow up on.
Final thoughts on LSU's season-opening loss
We've talked ad nauseam about the Tigers dropping their season opener but, there are a few final positive thoughts to share. Leaving that game, you have to feel excited about the steps LSU has taken defensively and as the younger defensive backs continue to develop, this team will only get better. In his first game as LSU's full-time starter, Garrett Nussmeier looked impressive and the few mistakes he made are things he'll overcome with more game experience. One or two things bounce LSU's way and were singing a completely different tune so let's wait to abandon ship until we see what the Tigers look like in SEC play.
Jaiden Braker adds a concerning offer
Not too long ago, the LSU Football team flipped impressive linebacker Jaiden Braker from South Carolina. Blake Baker had been pushing a long time to flip Jaiden Braker and finally landed him in August. There's a cause for concern now as in-state Georgia has finally offered Braker and the Bulldogs will certainly get a look. The Tigers will hope to hang onto Braker but, if the Bulldogs push hard this could become a commitment that closes out on signing day.
Walter Mathis set to commit this week
We've waited a long time to see three-star defensive tackle Walter Mathis Jr announce his commitment. There was talk that it would be before his Senior season, then before the end of August, but we'll finally see him commit sometime this week. The Tigers are the heavy favorite and they're finalists along with Clemson and Miami. This would be another massive addition for Bo Davis and it's a player that's clearly underrated when you look at his offer sheet as LSU, Clemson, Miami, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Tennessee, and Alabama have all offered the "three-star".
DJ Pickett visits Florida
This weekend, DJ Pickett took a trip to Gainsville to see the in-state Florida Gators host the Miami Hurricanes. If you're LSU, you couldn't be happier about the game that Pickett chose to attend as Florida looked like a disaster and suffered their worst home loss in decades. The Tigers will now hope that Pickett doesn't visit Miami because the Canes were impressive in their season opener but, Pickett has also planned three visits for games to Baton Rouge so the Tigers should feel safe.
Add a week zero game in 2025
A ton of the comments after the game were that the LSU Football team needs to open the season with a tune up game. That won't be the case as things currently stand as LSU is slated to open the season at Clemson in 2025. The LSU Football program simply put needs to swallow it's pride and schedule a softer opponent to open the season in week zero. Rich Rodriguez just openly admitted that he'd gladly get bullied if the program was paid to help it's budget issues so go ahead and call Jacksonville State.
What an awful time to catch Florida State
On the topic of season-opening losses, LSU may have caught Florida State at their peak under Mike Norvell. The Seminoles have fallen to 0-2 and have been dominated in the trenches by Georgia Tech and Boston College two weeks into the season. The Seminoles defensive line was declared the best in the country and they're seemingly getting no push. Massive transfer portal addition DJ Uiagalelei has been a flop for the Seminoles and this season could easily spiral out of control.
