The first week of the transfer portal is in the books, and it wasn't as hectic as last seasons but, there still two weeks left for chaos. The LSU Football team has lost 16 players to the portal while they've added five players. The Tigers have filled a handful of needs but, before this transfer window ends LSU still has some work to do.
The Tigers lost Kyren Lacy to the NFL Draft and will likely lose both CJ Daniels, Landon Ibieta, and Shelton Sampson Jr as they're all in the transfer portal. The Tigers went out and instantly added an incredibly talented wide receiver in Barion Brown from Kentucky who will instantly raise the upside of the offense.
The Tigers however still may need to add a wide receiver specifically a bigger bodied wide receiver that can play on the outside. LSU is one of the team's pushing for Oklahoma's Nic Anderson and landing him would put the finishing touches on this wide receiver room. Now if LSU also wants to add a receiver as a developmental player from the transfer portal that shouldn't change much either.
LSU's first transfer portal addition was Oklahoma Tight End Bauer Sharp which was a start to addressing a massive position of need. The Tigers likely need to add another tight end as they've lost three since the start of the year in Mac Markway, Ka'Morreun Pimpton, and Mason Taylor. LSU was targeting Arkansas tight end Luke Masz who committed to Ole Miss which means LSU will need to pivot to add another tight end.
The Tigers added one edge rusher in Nebraska's Jimari Butler but, as LSU replaces Sai'Vion Jones and Bradyn Swinson along with Da'Shawn Womack who transferred to Ole Miss. The edge rusher that could be the next to transfer to LSU is Jack Pyburn who visited LSU over the weekend. Most likely, LSU needs to bring in three edge rushers this cycle as you'll need to play a rotation next season as there isn't a player out there that can play to Bradyn Swinson's level.
A position where we thought LSU would push for true impact players is at safety as Major Burns and Sage Ryan both leave the program while the play at the position hasn't been great the past few seasons. LSU has only hosted one safety in Zechariah Poyser but, he appears to be heading elsewhere which means LSU will need to pivot again as the safety market hasn't materialized like everyone thought.
The position where LSU absolutely has to add a player or two is on the offensive line. LSU will lose Will Campbell, Emery Jones, Garrett Dellinger, and Miles Frazier. Paul Mubenga and Tyree Adams have played a ton of snaps this season but, you likely can't go into the season with as little experience as LSU will have on the offensive line.
The good thing for LSU is that we're just one week into the transfer portal cycle and players will only continue to enter their names into the transfer portal. As teams get eliminated from the College Football playoff, we should see players continue to leave their program which may be the best time to shop in the portal.
