The scene around LSU athletics has been extremely messy since the firing of Brian Kelly on Sunday evening. The decision to fire Kelly took the college football world by storm, and the ensuing chaos surrounding LSU has made headlines throughout the week. Adding to the chaos was Thursday night's announcement that LSU and athletic director Scott Woodward will be "parting ways."

The move isn't surprising, as fans could see the writing on the wall for a while now. LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey doesn't appear to be taking Woodward's firing well, which makes LSU's situation look a whole lot worse.

Following the LSU women's basketball program's 121-41 exhibition win over Langston, Mulkey was noticeably absent from the postgame press conference. Assistant coach Bob Starkey filled in for Mulkey, and explained why the head coach was not in attendance. "She's heartbroken," Starkey said.

Mulkey's absence from Thursday's postgame press conference is making waves on social media. Mulkey is never one to shy away from the cameras, which makes the move even more peculiar. She has yet to speak publicly about Woodward's firing.

The situation at LSU is extremely messy right now, and it doesn't appear to be getting better. As it stands, LSU is searching for a new university president, athletic director, and football coach. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry's comments earlier this week added fuel to the fire. With all that is going on, LSU is making one of the best jobs in college athletics less appealing by the minute.

Woodward hired Mulkey to lead the LSU women's basketball program in 2021. Since then, Mulkey has led the Tigers to a 122-20 overall record with a 53-11 mark in SEC play over four seasons. The Tigers have made the NCAA Tournament in all four of Mulkey's seasons in Baton Rouge, winning the National Championship in 2023. She enters Year 5 off back-to-back Elite Eight appearances.
