There was a massive news story that broke late on Tuesday Night which could shape the race for the College Football Playoff Group of Five race. It broke that UNLV Starting Quarterback Matthew Sluka announced he won't be playing for the rest of the season to preserve his Redshirt status this way he could transfer out of UNLV. Now this wasn't for a lack of playing time as UNLV is 3-0 and ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Sluka announced that he'd sit out as he was promised $100,000 in NIL to transfer to UNLV but, his deal hadn't been honored.

The school and Sluka immediatley began an online leak off as "sources" were reporting Sluka hadn't been paid, Sluka had been paid, Sluka never had a signed deal, and the most ridiculous was UNLV's Collective stating that they never made any deal with Sluka.

Given that the schools and the Head Coaches aren't always aware of every NIL Deal made, this format clearly ha sits flaws and will likely be one of the many horror stories we'll hear about NIL dealings.

Brian Kelly was asked about the situation where he said the following:

"The NIL, because it becomes a third-party piece, you lose control."

Brian Kelly

Kirby Smart uttered the sentiment that we'll only see this happening more in the near future. It is interesting to note that Georgia took in transfer Jaden Rashada who is currently in a lawsuit with Florida over a similar situation.

"I can tell you that I don’t think it’ll be the last."

Kirby Smart

The lack of an overall power causes these situations

As things currently stand, the NCAA is powerless as any action they take to control NIL will result in lawsuits across the board. The current situation in College Football is a wreck regardless which side you take as players think they have deals but, these collectives don't always fulfill them. Eventually, someone is going to need to take power and control these situations before we end up with anarchy in College Football.
