Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was drafted in the first round of the 1990 NBA draft with the third pick overall by the Denver Nuggets. He spent six seasons with the Nuggets before heading to the Sacramento Kings for two years, took two years off to play a season in Turkey and then retired, then finally came out of the retirement for one season to play for the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Abdul-Rauf played well in his six seasons with the Nuggets. In his rookie season he averaged 22.5 minutes on the court with 14.1 points per game, 1.8 total rebounds, and 3.1 assists as a point guard. He played in only 67 games but stated in 19 of them. He took a step back in his second season, which set up a great comeback in his third.
In his third season, Abdul-Rauf played and started in all 81 games averaging 33.5 minutes on the court with 19.2 points per game, 4.2 assists, and, 2.8 rebounds. Abdul-Rauf was awarded Most Improved Player of the year that season with the difference in his second and third season.
After six seasons with the Nuggets and injuries in his later seasons, Abdul-Rauf went to the Sacramento Kings where his play was not nearly as impressive as with the Nuggets, but still solid. In his career, Abdul-Rauf averaged 14.6 points per game, 3.5 assists per game, and 1.9 rebounds per game.
