Is the defensive tackle room good enough to anchor this run defense?

Heading into the break between Spring and Summer practices, the LSU Football team had a clear need at the defensive tackle position as they went into the transfer portal. The LSU Football team had already added Wisconsin transfer Gio Paez but, wanted to add additional pieces this Spring. In the Spring, LSU only added Grand Valley State transfer Jay'Viar Suggs who will take the jump to Division One football this season.

In 2023, the LSU Tigers allowed 163.4 rushing yards per game to opponents with talented run stuffing defensive tackles Maason Smith, Mekhi Wingo, and Jordan Jefferson. After losing their trio of NFL Caliber defensive tackles the LSU defense may take a massive step back against the run.

The run defense will be led by the play of Jacobian Guillory, Gio Paez, and Jay'Viar Suggs on the interior of this defense. If players like Suggs and incoming freshman Dominick McKinley aren't ready to make contributions in the run game early on this defensive line could be in danger against the run.

Behind the defensive line is a very solid linebacking core in Harold Perkins, Whit Weeks, and Greg Penn that can help stuff the run. If the defensive linemen can't at least eat up offensive linemen this defense could once again be a disappointment.
